ISLE OF MAN TECH FIRM GANDER LEADS FOOD WASTE REDUCTION WITH THIRD EARTHSHOT PRIZE NOMINATION

14 March 2025

Isle of Man-based Gander is proud to announce its nomination for The Earthshot Prize 2025, an accolade that celebrates groundbreaking solutions to the world's most pressing environmental challenges.

Nominated by BVRio – an Official Nominator for the Earthshot Prize 2025 based in Brazil. This marks Gander's third opportunity to contend for the prestigious prize having previously been nominated by global organisations such as Waste Resource Action Programme (WRAP) and Cranfield University. This reaffirms its role as a global leader in waste reduction and sustainability.

The Earthshot Prize, spearheaded by Sir David Attenborough, Prince William, and The Royal Foundation, is built around five ambitious goals, or "Earthshots":

  • Protect and Restore Nature
  • Clean Our Air
  • Revive Our Oceans
  • Build a Waste-Free World
  • Fix Our Climate

Gander's nomination aligns closely with the goal of "Building a Waste-Free World." Through its pioneering software technology platform, Gander enables retailers to market and sell items nearing their expiration date, reducing in-store food waste and promoting a circular economy.

Since its launch in 2019, Gander has saved an impressive 38.9 million food items from waste. Operating in the UK, Channel Islands, Ireland, Greece, Australia and Brazil, the platform has become a global force for sustainability, leveraging local data feeds to connect consumers with reduced-price food in real time.

The nomination from a BV Rio, showcases the global reach of Gander and also ties in with the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) being held in Brazil this year. Mike Osborne, Founder of Gander, highlights the importance of Gander's mission: “The urgency of transforming our efforts to reduce food waste is clear. Our technology enables retailers to reach more consumers, ensuring perfectly good food is sold and consumed rather than wasted. This benefits everyone - retailers maintain their margins, consumers access affordable food, and the resources used in food production are preserved.”

Gander’s nomination highlights its ambition to expand beyond food waste, tackling broader issues of global consumer waste by 2030. Mike Osborne adds: “Gander’s journey is about creating sustainable solutions that are both commercially viable and environmentally impactful. By addressing food and consumer waste, we are helping to shape a better future for generations to come."

Gander expands reach through Olio Deals, connecting with its 4.5 million sustainability-focused audience, and integrates with Google to support online grocery sales and enhance local search visibility.

This aligns with the unique opportunity presented by having a tech business established on the Isle of Man, where innovation can be fused with the Island’s Biosphere status.

“By cultivating a business rooted in sustainability and ethics, we are helping differentiate the Isle of Man as a forward-thinking, responsible hub for technology. This approach not only attracts talent and investment but also reinforces the island’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental and social responsibility,” concludes Mike Osborne.

The Earthshot Prize represents more than recognition for Gander; it is an opportunity to amplify its mission and inspire other innovators worldwide. As Gander continues to grow and evolve, it remains a beacon of hope and progress, proving that technology and collaboration can drive meaningful change.

About Gander

Gander is a world-first, award-winning SaaS platform, providing an optimised feed of reduced to clear products available in stores for display on channels like Olio, Google, Meta, Snappy Shopper. Launched in 2019, Gander was created to reduce food waste and transform the spending habits of shoppers.

Since then, Gander has expanded across the UK, Channel Islands, Europe, Australia and Brazil, with more plans in place for ongoing roll-out. To date Gander has helped hundreds of retailers to successfully reduce their food waste, improve their bottom line, enhance their sustainability credentials and save millions of food items from going to waste.

The tech integrates directly with retailers’ POS systems or any other data stream, which enables its retailers to automatically display to shoppers in real-time, all reduced-to-clear food on the shelves within their local store.

Gander does this automatically, meaning nothing changes in-store at all and no additional staff training is required. The platform allows the customer ultimate control over what reduced priced goods they search for, whether it is by location, favourite stores, reduction, food type and even dietary preferences.

Gander was renominated for the 2024 Earthshot Prize after it made it onto the list of contenders for the esteemed Earthshot Prize 2023, following nominations by NGO WRAP and Cranfield University. Gander was shortlisted in the SME of the Year category for Edie Awards 2023.
